A rare 18th century marble bath, hand carved from a solid block to a standard oval form with flat back. This bath would have originally been in place within a garden taking inspiration from the gardens of the Villa d’Este or similar, where water played within a niche setting, probably with grotto rock background. The bath itself supports two lion mask motifs holding rings, echoing the Roman originals. The simple curved moulding to the top contrasts with the rough-hewn base, which would have originally been subterranean. Condition is weathered with an old, previously restored fissure that we are currently in the process of securing and making good.
