Boxwood printing block
Circa 1924
Woodblock for the engraving to accompany the Poem “John Drinkwater” within “Libellus Lapidum”, a collection of satirical verse accompanied by wood engravings by David Jones and Hilary Pepler, printed and published by St. Dominic’s Press Ditchling, Sussex and 350 Oxford Street London.
The work relates to a popular Play “Abraham Lincoln” written by John Drinkwater, which was first performed in October 1918 at the Birmingham Rep. transferring to Hammersmith Playhouse London and on to Cort Theatre Broadway in 1919. It is interesting to note that the Play was adapted for a two reel short film made on Lee De Forests sound on Film Process.
Prints from this block after the use in the publication of Libellus Lapidum in 1924 included an edition of 446 published by Douglas Cleverdon in 1981, and a further edition of 60 printed for Gillian Jason by Alan Bultitude, with the permission of the David Jones Estate in 1989.
